Strategic Injury Prevention Partnership (SIPP)

Following a public consultation process, a suite of national injury prevention plans were endorsed by the National Public Health Partnership and recommended to Health Ministers through the Australian Health Ministers’ Advisory Council. Subsequently, in July 2005, Health Ministers endorsed The National Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion Plan: 2004 – 2014 for Australia supported by specific actions identified for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and for falls prevention in the accompanying endorsed documents, the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Safety Promotion Strategy and the National Falls Prevention for Older People Plan: 2004 Onwards.

The Plan builds on the National Injury Prevention Plan – Priorities for 2001-2003 and addresses new and continuing challenges in injury prevention and safety promotion. Ten principles frame the Plan and priority action areas are identified as:

  • The development of infrastructure
  • A population approach which focuses on life stages: children, youth and young adults, adults, and older people
  • A focus on the needs of two special populations: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and rural and remote populations
  • A focus on the effects of alcohol as a risk factor in many areas of injury.

For each of the priority areas for action, the key issues and data are outlined together with a list of priority activities.
