Be Active Australia: A Health Sector Framework for Action 2005 - 2010In April 2004 the draft Be Active Australia, a National Physical Activity for Health Action Plan (now renamed Be Active Australia: A Health Sector Framework for Action 2005 -2010 ) was released for consultation. Consultations took place in each jurisdiction through the Strategic Inter-Governmental forum on Physical Activity and Health (SIGPAH) representative, with the NPHP website providing an alternative mechanism to elicit feedback via a Proforma for Comment. Over 70 responses, representing over 250 organisations, were received. Many thanks to all who provided comment. Together with the whole-of-population consultation, SIGPAH contracted a parallel consultation process that specifically sought comment from Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander peoples across Australia. National consensus workshops on the draft Plan Be Active Australia were then held. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples workshop focussed specifically on reviewing the issues raised by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and individuals during the national consultations. In addition, the workshop was designed to allow participants to make recommendations on how to ensure the final 'Be Active Australia' plan reflects these issues and priorities. Outcomes of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples workshop were presented and incorporated into the whole-of-population workshop held the following day. The whole-of-population workshop focussed on reaching agreement on the Plan as well as discussing implementation issues. Following the workshops the final draft was complete by SIGPAH taking into consideration workshop outcomes. The final draft has been endorsed by the NPHP for consideration by AHMAC for referral to Health Ministers. The SIGPAH work program for 2005-2006 will be informed by priorities coming out of Be Active Australia. Initial implementation will focus on Monitoring and Surveillance, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and Intersectoral work. Consultation Background Documents
