Legislation Reference Network

The role of legislation as an important tool in the advancement of public health is recognised by the National Public Health Partnership.

At its June 2001 meeting, the National Public Health Partnership Group considered its priority agenda in the context of the review of the Partnership Memorandum of Understanding. As an outcome of these discussions, it was agreed that there was to be a stronger focus on a cross cutting approach to priority issues.

In this context, the Legislation Reference Network (LRN) is responsible for addressing legislative issues as a cross cutting theme in Partnership work.

The LRN is involved in information sharing, facilitating communication and cooperation between jurisdictions in relation to developments in legislation and notification of topical issues. It also provides a pool of expertise for membership on steering groups for NPHP projects and a reference point for advice on public health law.

The LRN reviews reports for the NPHP that have legislative implications and provides advice and recommendations to the Partnership Group on legislative policy issues referred to the Network.

A key component of the work of the LRN is the ongoing development of the Legislators’ Tool Kit. The Tool Kit is an information resource which supports national public health legislative review activities and assists public health legislators and policy makers.
