Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Injury Prevention Action Committee

In recognition of the extremely high rates of injury in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, the National Public Health Partnership established the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Injury Prevention Action Committee (ATSIIPAC) in September 2002, to provide a forum for leadership in injury prevention amongst Indigenous people in Australia.

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Safety Promotion Strategy

The Draft National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Safety Promotion Strategy has been developed by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Injury Prevention Action Committee (ATSIIPAC) to address the specific safety promotion and injury prevention needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Safety Promotion Strategy aims to enhance community safety, prevent injury and reduce harm through:
- improving the safety of environments
- increasing community capacity to promote well being
- supporting communities to prioritise safety issues and to design, implement and evaluate safety promotion and injury prevention programs
- mobilising government and non-government organisations to ensure maximum infrastructure and support for safety promotion and injury prevention
- communities, government, and non-government sectors working together.

The NPHP is currently seeking endorsement of the Strategy by the Australian Health Ministers' Advisory Council.
